ONEONTA, NY – The Alfred University women's basketball team finished their weekend road trip with a victory over Hartwick College 59-48 on Saturday at Lambros Arena.
The Saxons (11-9, 6-8 Empire 8) got off to a hot start, leading 30-12 at halftime and held off the Hawks the rest of the way.
Grace Rittenhouse (Dansville, NY/Dansville) led the Saxons in scoring with 16 points, six rebounds, two steals and an assist. Leah Harkenrider (Hornell, NY/Hornell) was right behind with 15 points, along with two rebounds, a steal and an assist. Karly Welty (Portville, NY/Portville Central) also had 12 points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists.
"I'm again really pleased we played really hard today." Head Coach Mike Moskowitz said. "It's difficult to win conference games and even more difficult against a well coached team on the back end of a back to back on the road. We had some really nice offensive looks and executed our defensive game plan very well."
The Saxons made a big run in the second quarter after finishing the first quarter with a narrow lead of 14-10. They ripped off 22 straight points before the Hawks finally responded with a basket of their own before the end of the half. Along with the great offense in the second, the Saxons stellar defense made sure that basket would be the Hawks only score of the quarter. That great scoring run of 24-2 throughout the second was what earned them a well deserved conference win on the road after playing the day prior.
"So happy for this group to come away with the win, but we know we have more work to do on Monday to prepare for a Medaille team that's improving every day." Moskowitz said
Alfred University returns to action Tuesday, February 7th for the final of three road conference contests against Medaille University, with the tip-off scheduled for 5:30 PM.
