Women's Basketball Secures Road Win Over Medaille, 62-41

BUFFALO, NY - The Alfred University women's basketball team wrapped up their final road game of the regular season with a 62-41 win over Medaille University on Tuesday evening from the Sullivan Center.

The Saxons (12-9, 7-8 Empire 8) held the Mavericks (5-15, 3-11 Empire 8) to 18.2 percent from 3-point range, while forcing 11 turnovers in their win.

Gillian Flint (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) tied her career-high with 21 points to go with three rebounds and an assist. Grace Rittenhouse (Dansville, NY/Dansville) finished with a double-double performance that consisted of 17 points and 10 rebounds. Karly Welty (Portville, NY/Portville Central) stuffed the box score with five points, 11 boards, and three assists.

"I'm really proud of our group for executing on both ends," Head Coach Mike Moskowitz said. "Our energy, communication, and attention to detail on the defensive end was really consistent throughout. Offensively, we shared the ball well and picked our spots properly on when to attack the rim and when to get a look from the perimeter."

The Mavericks got off to a quick lead in the first quarter with an opening 6-0 run. Rittenhouse opened scoring for the Saxons with a 3-point shot. Seven straight points from Flint gave Alfred University their first lead of the evening, as they went into the second quarter with a 12-10 advantage. The Saxons began the second quarter on an 8-0 run to extend their lead by as many as 10 points. Alfred University allowed just seven points to Medaille before going into halftime with a 30-17 lead.

The Saxons relied on the 3-point shot to open the second half, as Rittenhouse and Allison O'Toole (Simi Valley, CA/Simi Valley) were successful from beyond the arc. Alfred University made nearly half their shots from the field in the third quarter before entering the fourth quarter with a 50-30 lead. Each side traded successful shots in the fourth quarter, but Mackenzie Cannon (Odessa, NY/Odessa Montour) scored a team-high six points in the quarter to maintain the lead and secure the win.

"We're looking forward to playing at home again this weekend and seeing how we can do against two dangerous teams," Moskowitz said.

Alfred University will next return home to host Utica University on Friday at 5:30 PM.
