SUNY Brockport Slips Past Saxons, 54-52

ALFRED, NY – A competitive non-conference matchup for the Alfred University men's basketball team resulted in a 54-52 loss against SUNY Brockport on Tuesday night from the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.

The Saxons (2-4, 0-0 Empire 8) held the Golden Eagles (4-1, 0-0 SUNYAC) to just four successful shots from three-point territory as part of their efforts.

Franlys Valenzuela (Santiago de los Cabelleros, Dominican Republic/San Ysidro) finished the game with 18 rebounds, which marks the most in a single game since the 2018-19 season. Adam Enders (Belfast, NY/Belfast) ended with a team-high 11 points to go with two rebounds. Casey Curran (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) added nine points and eight boards for AU.

"I thought our guys played incredibly hard tonight," Head Coach Erich Kaempffe said. "I'm really proud of our efforts. We have some things to clean up from an execution standpoint, and we're all locked in on doing that. A lot of credit to Coach Clarke and Brockport. They run a terrific program and played well tonight."

The Saxons relied on Gabe Eldaye (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) for an early three-point shot in the first half for the initial lead. The Golden Eagles climbed back and led by as many as four points, but a 9-0 run gave AU the advantage with eight minutes remaining in the half. Each team traded late shots, but Alfred University held Brockport to just two points across the final three minutes of action before taking a 29-24 lead into halftime. A deep shot from Enders to begin the second half extended the lead for AU. A 6-0 run by the Golden Eagles left the Saxons leading by one possession with just over 10 minutes to play. Five quick points from Brockport tied the game with 1:44 remaining in the second half. In their following possession, the Golden Eagles took their first lead of the evening and eventually secured the game.

Alfred University will next begin Empire 8 competition on Saturday at home against Elmira College at 4:00 PM.
