ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's basketball earned their first Empire 8 conference victory of the season following a 60-51 win over Elmira College on Saturday from the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.
The Saxons (3-4, 1-0 Empire 8) have now defeated the Soaring Eagles (2-5, 0-1 Empire 8) in each of their last 15 matchups.
Oscar Wolter (Munich, Germany/Lycee Jean Renoir) led Alfred University with 20 points off the bench along with nine rebounds.
Casey Curran (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) finished the game with a double-double performance that included 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Franlys Valenzuela (Santiago de los Cabelleros, Dominican Republic San Ysidro) added seven points and 14 rebounds.
"We're always excited about a conference win," Head Coach
Erich Kaempffe said. "I thought we did a nice job defensively and on the backboards. We'll get back to work and try to keep getting better on the offensive end."
The Soaring Eagles took a brief lead in the opening half, but a three-point shot from Wolter tied the game. Back-to-back deep shots between Wolter and
Tyler Curran (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) put the Saxons ahead by six points. Alfred University ended the first half on a 9-0 run before taking a 31-21 lead into halftime.
Each team hit successful shots to begin the second have, but a three-point shot from Casey had the Saxons leading by as many as 13 points. Wolter had a standout second half performance for AU, recording 10 points and seven rebounds. The Saxons relied on four successful free throws in the final minute of action to close out the game and record the win.
Alfred University will next host SUNY Geneseo on Tuesday at 6:30 PM.
