ROCHESTER, NY – The Alfred University women's volleyball team claimed a non-conference win on Friday evening during the RIT Invitational, topping SUNY Oneonta in five sets.
The Saxons (10-10, 5-3 Empire 8) took the first two sets from the Red Dragons (5-18, 2-7 SUNYAC), 25-23 and 25-18 before dropping the next two, 20-25 and 10-25. They clinched the match in the fifth set, 15-10.
Casey Grange (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) led the match in points and kills with season-highs in both categories. She totaled 26.5 points from 26 kills and one block assist. She hit a .292 with only seven errors on her 65 attacks.
Jamie Chun (Hilo, HI/Hilo) followed with 14.0 points from 10 kills and a match-high four service aces (tied for the match-high). Chun was third in the match in points and also third in digs, adding 17 to her stat-line.
Darian Ortiz (Santa Fe, NM/St. Michael's) led the match in digs with 32 while adding in three set assists.
Delaney Sims (Bogart, GA/George Walton Academy) had a match-high in set assists with 45, beating out the top setter for Oneonta by 20 assists.
In the final, deciding set, the Saxons got out to an early 4-1 lead after kills from Grange and one from Sims. They would go on to build the lead to a 9-3 advantage before Oneonta started to chip away at the lead.
Fiona McNeil (Fayetteville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt), facing a 14-10 lead for AU put away the match with a kill for the final point of the night.
The Saxons will next face University of Rochester on Saturday, October 28 at 11:00am before playing Skidmore College after at 3:00pm.
