ELMIRA, NY – The Alfred University women's volleyball team secured a four-set Empire-8 conference win on the road at Elmira College on Wednesday evening.
The Saxons (9-10, 5-3 Empire 8) dropped set two but came out on top in the first, third and fourth sets. The final scoreline for the Saxons was 25-11, 22-25, 25-19, 25-15 as they delivered the Soaring Eagles (7-16,0-7 Empire 8) the Wednesday conference loss.
"It was great to finish off the conference season with two straight wins! We look forward to competing in the conference playoffs," Head Coach
Mike Honeycutt said. "Sound the horns!"
Casey Grange (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) lead the team in points with a match-high 14.5 points recording 14 kills and one block assist.
Taylor Malone (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) followed Grange with eight kills and one ace, totaling 9.0 points. Tied with Malone,
Jamie Chun (Hilo, HI/Hilo) recorded 9.0 points for the Saxons with six kills and three aces while also recording 10 digs and two set assists to help with the win.
Darian Ortiz (Santa Fe, NM/St. Michael's) added 16 digs, four assists and two aces.
Madalynn McGowan (Corona, CA/Corona) contributed to Wednesday's win with eight digs, one set assist and one ace.
The Saxons fought point-for-point in the first set until Chun went on a three-kill spree to lead the set 12-9.
Leah Marques (Adelanto, CA/Adelanto) had a great set to
Fiona McNeil (Fayetteville, NY/Jamesville-
DeWitt) who recorded her first of two kills in the game making the score 13-11. Chun finishes the set serving with a 13-point streak making the score 25-11.
After dropping the second set to Elmira, Alfred University gradually picked up the intensity as Grange, Malone and
Shelby Baker (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo) record kills to hold a close, 14-13 lead. Ortiz brought up the team's intensity with a six-point serving spree to bring the Saxons lead to 22-14. Malone closed the set at 25-19 with a kill off a set from
Delaney Sims (Bogart, GA, George Walton Academy).
Alfred went into the final set with a 7-2 lead. Sims scored a kill and put up some great sets to the offense as Chun, Grange and Malone record five more kills in the match allowing the Saxons to gain a 19-9 lead for the set. Elmira slowly gained points but couldn't catch up as the Saxons defense fought hard in the end of the set to earn another conference victory.
The Saxons will next travel to the Rochester Institute of Technology for a two-day, three-match tournament this weekend. They begin the weekend with a solo match against SUNY Oneonta on Friday,
October 25 at 5:00pm. Then, the Saxons will play against University of Rochester at 11:00am and Skidmore College at 3:00pm on Saturday.
