Football Drops Conference Loss to Utica

ALFRED, NY - The Alfred University football team continued their season with a 28-0 loss to Utica University on Saturday from Yunevich Stadium.

The Saxons (3-4, 1-2 Empire 8) totaled 156 yards against the Pioneers (7-1, 3-1 Empire 8), 81 of which came from the run game.

"I'm definitely not happy with the way we performed today," Head Coach Bob Rankl said. "We hold ourselves to a very high standard. That standard includes a tradition of success on and off the field. We need to be better, and our players and coaches will do everything that we can to improve for next week."

The Pioneers drove down the field in their opening possession, but a missed field goal gave the Saxons breathing room. Utica responded in their following drive, scoring a 28-yard touchdown to take the lead. The Saxons defense made a huge stop thanks to an interception from Luke Atlas (Wilson, NY/Wilson) before going into the second quarter with a 7-0 deficit.

The Pioneers cashed in on an early field goal in the second quarter to extend their lead. An 11-play drive for Utica expanded their lead to 17-0. The Pioneers scored once more before going into halftime with a 23-0 advantage.

The Saxons defense played well to begin the second half, limiting the Pioneers to just 3 points allowed before entering the final quarter behind 26-0. In the early moments of the fourth quarter, the Pioneers defense recorded a safety to make the score 28-0 and eventually secure the win.

Alfred University will next hit the road to take on St. John Fisher University next Saturday at 12:00 PM.
