ROCHESTER, NY – A competitive effort from the Alfred University football team came up short as part of a 30-12 loss to St. John Fisher University on Saturday from Growney Stadium.
The Saxons (3-5, 1-3 Empire 8) scored all their points in the second half as part of their efforts against the Cardinals (5-3, 2-2 Empire 8).
Chris Kelly (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY/Sachem North) led the Saxons offense, totaling 158 passing yards and 1 touchdown, while adding 33 yards and an additional touchdown through the run game.
Jacob Kelsey (Hilton, NY/Hilton) finished the game with 89 receiving yards and a touchdown, becoming the first AU receiver since 2017 to record 1,000 career receiving yards.
Joe Copp (Minoa, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) ended the game with a team-high 13 tackles.
"I certainly was hoping that we would come out and look a little shaper today on both sides of the football," Head Coach
Bob Rankl said. "At the end of the day, next week is certainly very significant for us. It will be the final home game for our seniors, and we are honoring two former football players that are being inducted to the Hall of Fame. I fully expect that our guys will be fully prepared to take on Hartwick next Saturday."
The first scoring drive for Alfred University began in the third quarter following an important fumble recovery from
Roque Santiago (Canisteo, NY/Canisteo-Greenwood). Two plays later, a 9-yard rush from Kelly gave the Saxons their first points of the afternoon. In the fourth quarter, a 9-play drive was capped by a 20-yard touchdown pass from Kelly to Kelsey.
Alfred University will next host Hartwick College next Saturday at 2:00 PM as part of Hall of Fame Weekend and Senior Day.
