Women's Basketball Loses Conference Matchup Against Nazareth

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's basketball team lost 59-72 against Nazareth College on Friday night at Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.

The Saxons (10-7, 5-6 Empire 8) kept it close through the first quarter until the Golden Flyers pulled away in the second and maintained their lead the rest of the way.

Gillian Flint (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) led the Saxons in scoring with 13 points. Ana Ion (Bucharest, Romania/Episcopal School of Jacksonville) added 11 points of her own, along with three rebounds, a block, and an assist. Karly Welty (Portville, NY/Portville Central) also had eight points, six rebounds, a steal, and an assist.

"I thought we played pretty well this evening and Naz was just really good at playing through the pressure and making some timely plays." Head Coach Mike Moskowitz said. "Every time we tried to cut into the lead, they responded. I was pleased with our shot selection and patience on offense - we had some great looks, some that went in, some that didn't. There were a few in the late third and early fourth that we definitely needed to make our run, but they seemed to rim out."

The Saxons brought the score back to 15-12 to end the first after the Golden Flyers jumped out to an early six point lead. Both teams traded baskets back and forth until late second quarter when the Flyers scored three straight baskets to widen their lead to 11 points. The Saxons went to the halftime break down by 10 points but couldn't mount a comeback in the second half.

"We have a quick turnaround tomorrow against a great Fisher team. We're hoping to convert on those offensive opportunities, while limiting their easy looks." Moskowitz said

Alfred University returns to action Saturday at home for the second leg of a conference doubleheader against St. John Fisher University, with the tip-off currently scheduled for 2:00 PM.
