ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's swimming & diving team narrowly lost to NCAA Division II foe, Le Moyne College on Tuesday afternoon, 128-109 to open up competition for the 2023 portion of the schedule.
The guys fought a pretty good battle through the whole meet and came up just short in the last relay; we had some other opportunities throughout the meet but I cannot complain about our efforts and performances all considered," Head Coach
Brian Striker '00 said. "I am looking forward to the next two meets this week."
The Saxons meet came down to the wire as the 200-yard freestyle was the deciding race as AU held only a two-point advantage, 111-109. The Dolphins' A-team of
Xavier Silaika, Belal Aly, Keegan Stafford and
Dominic Fratto claimed 11 points in first place with a time of 1:29.62 while their B-team tacked on two points in third place. AU's A-team of
Paul Tuttle (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit), Noam Sokolovsky (East Lyme, CT/East Lyme), Nathan Sponenberg (Bloomsburg, PA/Central Columbia) and
Jordan Fixsen (Fairport, NY/Penfield) clocked in a time of 1:33.57 for four points, resulting in the final score of 122-115.
AU started the day off with a win in the other relay, the 200-yard medley as the team of
William LaMastus (Maumee, OH/Anthony Wayne), Wade LaMastus (Maumee, OH/Anthony Wayne), Fernando Lagos (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/Escuela e Instituo Lincoln) and
Alessandro Lagos Canales (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/Escuela e Instituo Lincoln) finished with a time of 1:38.90.
The Lagos brothers and Will LaMastus then went 2-3-4 in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing with times of 1:51.54 (Fernando), 1:52.24 (Will) and 1:53.76 (Alessandro), respectively for another big jump in points.
Phillip Volaski (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) was the first individual Saxon to earn a win as he raced to a 2:02.87 finish in the 200-yard individual medley, followed closely by Wade in third place (2:10.55) and
Giuseppe Piede (Dunellen, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) in fourth (2:11.41).
Ryan Way (Penfield, NY/Penfield) finished second on the 1-meter board, scoring 180.15 and was followed by teammate,
Max Sereno (Victor, NY/Victor) in third with a score of 172.80. Way and Sereno went on to finish second (193.65) and third (111.60), respectively on the 3-meter board.
Fernando picked up a win in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.21. Later on in the meet,
Colin Schultz (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) earned a win in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.33, edging Le Moyne's
Ryan McMahon and his time of 1:02.92, just before he 200-yard freestyle relay.
The Saxons will next travel to Utica College on Friday, January 13 for a 1:00pm meet in Empire 8 action before a quick turnaround back at the McLane Natatorium on Saturday, January 14 when they host another E8 foe in Hartwick College, also at 1:00pm.
