Men's Swimming & Diving Edged by Division II Le Moyne

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's swimming & diving team narrowly lost to NCAA Division II foe, Le Moyne College on Tuesday afternoon, 128-109 to open up competition for the 2023 portion of the schedule.

The guys fought a pretty good battle through the whole meet and came up just short in the last relay; we had some other opportunities throughout the meet but I cannot complain about our efforts and performances all considered," Head Coach Brian Striker '00 said. "I am looking forward to the next two meets this week."

The Saxons meet came down to the wire as the 200-yard freestyle was the deciding race as AU held only a two-point advantage, 111-109. The Dolphins' A-team of Xavier Silaika, Belal Aly, Keegan Stafford and Dominic Fratto claimed 11 points in first place with a time of 1:29.62 while their B-team tacked on two points in third place. AU's A-team of Paul Tuttle (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit), Noam Sokolovsky (East Lyme, CT/East Lyme), Nathan Sponenberg (Bloomsburg, PA/Central Columbia) and Jordan Fixsen (Fairport, NY/Penfield) clocked in a time of 1:33.57 for four points, resulting in the final score of 122-115.

The Lagos brothers and Will LaMastus then went 2-3-4 in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing with times of 1:51.54 (Fernando), 1:52.24 (Will) and 1:53.76 (Alessandro), respectively for another big jump in points.

Phillip Volaski (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) was the first individual Saxon to earn a win as he raced to a 2:02.87 finish in the 200-yard individual medley, followed closely by Wade in third place (2:10.55) and Giuseppe Piede (Dunellen, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) in fourth (2:11.41).

Ryan Way (Penfield, NY/Penfield) finished second on the 1-meter board, scoring 180.15 and was followed by teammate, Max Sereno (Victor, NY/Victor) in third with a score of 172.80. Way and Sereno went on to finish second (193.65) and third (111.60), respectively on the 3-meter board.

Fernando picked up a win in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.21. Later on in the meet, Colin Schultz (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) earned a win in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.33, edging Le Moyne's Ryan McMahon and his time of 1:02.92, just before he 200-yard freestyle relay.
