More Pool Records and School Record Broken as Saxons Breeze by Roberts Wesleyan

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's swimming & diving team defeated visiting NCAA Division II opponent, Roberts Wesleyan University, 196-97 on Wednesday evening from the McLane Natatorium.

"It was another great showing for the Saxons this evening!  There were some great things for us to be excited about as we continue to look great both in our swimming events and our diving," Head Coach Brian Striker '00 said. "We had many in-season best performances tonight. I have been thoroughly impressed with the effort we have been putting forth every day. That was my first time competing against Roberts Wesleyan, it was a fun meet – great swimming and diving on both sides. We have a quick turnaround as we need to get ready for Brockport on Saturday…so back in the water in the morning. Congratulations to Youssef for breaking our school record in the 100-backstroke!"

The Saxons had three athletes record four victories each in the dominant win. Youssef amr Abdallatif (Cairo, Egypt/Raya Language School) had two relay wins and two individual wins. The two individual wins were both pool records, breaking his own mark in both of the backstroke events, while his 100-yard backstroke time broke the overall school record time of 50.46, set by Matt Baker '09 on March 20 in 2009. His new time of 49.65 sits atop the Saxon leaderboards. Abdallatif recorded a new pool record time of 1:52.35 in the 200-back as his second individual win.

He joined Carlos Gonzalez (Baja California, Mexico/Unifront), Andre Ayala (Mexico City, Mexico/Preparatoria Noº5) and Calem Striker (Hornell, NY/Hornell) in the opening men's event, the 200-yard medley relay, combining for a time of 1:36.02 for the win. Ayala, Abdallatif and Striker were joined by Emmanuel Drappatz (Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel Area) for the 200-free relay, winning with a time of 1:27.62, short of the 2004 pool record of 1:26.95.

Striker won both sprint freestyle events, finishing with a 21.91 in the 50 and a 48.40 in the 100. Ayala won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:42.57, breaking the 2015 pool record time of 1:43.25, set by David Coombes '15. Coombes is set to be inducted into the Alfred University Athletics Hall of Fame this November. Ayala went on the win the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:42.01, breaking Baker's pool record time of 4:48.26 set in 2009.

Gonzalez added two more victories on the night, taking the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 58.39 before going on to win the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:58.65.

Jaxson McQuaid (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) swept the diving events. He began with a score of 235.85 off of the 3-meter board just before taking the 1-meter gold with a score of 254.90.

A pair of Saxons tacked on individual wins on Wednesday night. Sean Killian (Kenmore, NY/St. Joseph's Collegiate Institution) won the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:33.51. Mahmoud Elkady (Cairo, Egypt/Smart City) won the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:17.31.

The Saxons will next face their first Empire 8 opponent with a road trip to SUNY Brockport on Saturday, October 25 for a 1:00pm meet.
