ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University football team was honored with
Joe Copp (Minoa, NY/East Syracuse) and
Max Freeman IV (Painted Post, NY/Corning-Painted Post) both being named as members of the D3football.com Team of the Week following the program's 31-23 win over Kalamazoo College last Saturday.
The D3football Team of the Week recognizes the top performances at each position from the previous week across Division III. Copp was one of three linebackers selected for the award, while Freeman was one of two running backs receiving recognition.
Copp led all players over Homecoming weekend with 11 tackles, including a career-high nine solo tackles and three sacks for a total loss of 17 yards. Copp was credited with an additional tackle for a loss of six yards in the victory, along with two crucial pass breakups. Copp is now ranked 40th in the nation in solo tackles per game (5.8) and 53rd in total tackles per game (9.5).
Freeman enjoyed a breakout performance from the backfield, totaling a career-high 274 rushing yards across 33 attempts. The rushing total for Freeman was the third-highest mark in program history for the Saxons. He ended the game with two touchdowns, coming from the goal line in the first quarter and from a career-high 80-yard run in the fourth quarter. The efforts of Freeman were previously recognized by the Empire 8 conference, as he was named Co-Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in his playing career. Freeman is now ninth in the nation in total rushing yards (478) and 14th in rushing yards per game (119.5).
