Macy Youngberg (Falconer, NY/Falconer Central) was named the Empire 8 Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the second week in a row on Monday in an official announcement by Associate Commissioner,
Joe Venniro.
Youngberg continues her standout season as she helped the Saxons to their first 7-0 start since the 2004 season. The Saxons finished the week 1-1 in Empire 8 play, defeating St. John Fisher for the first time since the 2016 season. Youngberg is now 9-1 in singles and is 9-1 in doubles with
Alina Zabihailo (Kyiv, Ukraine/Educational Complex #143). She is 3-0 in both singles and doubles in Empire 8 action as she was undefeated on the week at No. 1 doubles and No. 4 singles. Youngberg and Zabihailo defeated
Kathryn Strait and
Abby Garvey of Fisher, 8-4 and then defeated
Aliya Guzman and
Claire Pullen, 8-5 at Nazareth. Individually, Youngberg won during Homecoming Weekend against Fisher's
Madison Galvin, 6-1, 6-4. She closed out her week with a three-set thriller against Nazareth's
Scarlett Wagner, 6-7(7-9), 6-2, 6-1.
Youngberg was also joined in the Empire 8 listings by
Max Freeman IV (Painted Post, NY/Corning-Painted Post) as a Football Co-Offensive Player of the Week and
Casey Grange (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) as the Women's Volleyball Rookie of the Week. Both Youngberg and Freeman IV were the Saxons of the Week on Monday as well.
Youngberg and the Saxons will next host their Saxon-for-Saxon event, an event for all Saxon student-athletes to come and support the home team. The Saxon-for-Saxon event will be observed when AU hosts Medaille University in Empire 8 action on Friday, September 30 at 3:30pm at the William T. Brown Tennis Courts.
