Men's Soccer Completes Bryan Karl Tournament With Loss to Penn State Harrisburg

ALFRED, NY - The Alfred University men's soccer team rounded out the Karl Bryan Tournament with a 3-0 loss to Penn State Harrisburg on Saturday afternoon from Yunevich Stadium.

The Saxons (1-2-1, 0-0 Empire 8) faced 20 shots, eight of which were on goal. Both AU and Penn State Harrisburg (2-1-2, 0-0 NEAC) were credited with four corner kick attempts.

AJ Giaquinto (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills Ballston-Lake) and Michael Walther (West Irondequoit, NY/West Irondequoit) each finished with one shot on goal for the Saxons.

"The tournament was a great chance to get a lot of looks at different players, tactical shapes, roles, and responsibilities," Assistant Coach Andrew Barnikel said. "It was very important to see what type of depth we had, and we can use that knowledge in future games."

The Lions were aggressive in the opening minutes of the first half, finding the back of the net in the 8th minute for the early 1-0 lead. Alfred University successfully defended Penn State Harrisburg's next two shots before the Lions scored once again to put the Saxons in a 2-0 deficit entering halftime. In the second half, AU faced five shots from Penn State Harrisburg before they scored again to extend their lead. The Saxons earned four corner kick attempts in the second half, but could not get on the scoreboard before the final horn.

"The next two games will be really good challenges for us against two strong SUNYAC teams," Barnikel said. "The boys will get a look at the film together, learn from it and we will take that into those games. We have to continue winning the physical battles and when we are finishing our chances, the scoreboard will take care of itself."

Alfred University will next host Buffalo State College under the lights on Tuesday with the game scheduled to begin at 8:00 PM.
