ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University football coaching staff will see three new faces in the 2022 season as
Curtis Bailey has been named the new Offensive Coordinator to highlight the new hires.
"I am very excited to announce that Curtis [Bailey] will be joining our staff to lead our offense," Head Coach
Bob Rankl said. "He has had a proven track record of success coaching the quarterbacks at Allegheny. Through the interview process it became very clear that he is someone who would embrace the strong culture of our program. I have no doubt that he will do a great job as our offensive coordinator."
Joining Coach Bailey are
Nick Ulassin as the Special Teams Coordinator/Defensive Backs Coach/ Junior Varsity Head Coach and
Chris Koehler as the Defensive Line Coach, both joined the Saxons in the Spring 2022 semester.
John Vita also joins the Saxon football staff as the running backs coach while working towards a graduate degree.
Coach Bailey comes to Alfred University after a five-year stay with the Gators of Allegheny College as the Special Teams Coordinator/Quarterback Coach. In only his second season with the Gators, Bailey and his staff helped coach the team to its first winning season since going 7-3 in 2010 and first North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) winning campaign since going 4-3 in 2012. Their 2018 season resulted with an overall record of 6-4 while going 6-3 in NCAC action.

Paul Vecchio, Coach Rankl and the rest of his staff for welcoming me and my family to Alfred University," Coach Bailey said. "It was obvious when I stepped foot on campus that this was a special place. Along with the rich football tradition, Alfred University offers great academics and cares deeply about the development of their students. I'm excited to get to work with our guys!"
Prior to Allegheny College, Bailey was the 2016 linebackers coach at the University of Rochester. Just shortly before his stint with the Yellowjackets, he was the defensive backs coach and video coordinator for Division II Gannon University, helping the Golden Knights to 15 wins over two years.
Bailey graduated from Penn State-Behrend in 2014 with a bachelors in English. From there, he started his first coaching experience as the defensive backs and quarterbacks coach for North East High School from 2010 until 2013.
"I am very excited to add Nick [Ulassin] to our coaching staff," Head Coach Rankl said. "He has a wealth of football experience and knowledge and most importantly he shares our team's vision of promoting character, discipline and work ethic above everything else. I know that he will do a great job of leading our junior varsity program, coordinating our specials teams and coaching our defensive backs."
Coach Ulassin joined the Saxons in March of 2022 after four years at his alma mater of Gettysburg College. While with the Bullets, he was the special teams coordinator and linebackers coach while also working heavily with recruiting and strength & conditioning. His first two seasons at Gettysburg, Ulassin was the defensive backs coach. From the summer of 2016 to the summer of 2018, Coach Ulassin was working with Alfred University alumnus and football great,
Rashaan Jordan '94, who still holds places in the Saxons' rushing records as well as being a Champion Football Gazette All-American in 1993. Coach Ulassin and Jordan coached together at Division II Wingate University in North Carolina where Ulassin was the defensive backs graduate assistant and assistant recruiting coordinator.
Ulassin first earned coaching experience upon graduating from Gettysburg in 2015 by making the journey to Western New England University where he coached for one season.
He earned his bachelors in English with a minor in education from Gettysburg before completing his masters in sports management at Wingate in 2018.
A local resident to Alfred University, Coach Koehler begins his role within the Saxons' football staff as a physical education & adaptive PE teacher at Canisteo-Greenwood Central School since 2017. During his time there, he was also the Athletic Director from 2018 until 2021. Since 2018, Koehler was also a varsity football assistant coach for Canisteo-Greenwood, coaching as the offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, defensive line and wide-receiver coach.
He has had multiple coaching experiences throughout Steuben County and even into Allegany County, coaching basketball, baseball and football between schools such as Hornell High School, Canisteo-Greenwood and Whitesville Central School since 2011.
Coach Koehler earned his bachelors at SUNY Brockport as well as his physical education teacher certification K-12 with New York State Coaching Certification and is a New York State Certified Teacher. Afterwards, he went on to earn his masters in athletic administration from Ohio University.
Coach Vita comes to AU after three years as an assistant coach for Worcester State University, where he helped coach the defensive line and running backs during different seasons. He also helped coach the kickoff unit. Coach Vita also acted as the strength & conditioning coordinator for the Lancers.
Prior to Worcester State, Vita held multiple positions at Castleton University including an intern football coach in the summer of 2018 and an assistant football coach in the Spring of 2019. He graduated from Castleton University with his bachelors in exercise science and a minor in coaching.
