ALFRED, NY – Four graduating members from the Alfred University men's lacrosse team scored as part of Senior Day during a 26-5 victory over Russell Sage College on Saturday afternoon from Yunevich Stadium.
 
The Saxons (7-2, 1-0 Empire 8) finished 13-of-16 in clear attempts, while limiting the Gators (5-7, 0-3 Empire 8) to 10 shots on goal.
 
Josh Hauman (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) scored a career-high five goals across seven shots on goal. Drew Cartwright (Elmira, NY/Elmira) finished with seven points from four goals and three assists. Jonathan Kay (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) totaled a career-high four goals along with one assist. Paul Forte (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) recorded three goals and two assists for AU.
 
"I'm proud of our seniors," Head Coach Jason Lockner said. "They have navigated their way through a pandemic and continued to give the team everything they have. I'm most impressed with the character of these student-athletes!"
 
Russell Sage was the first to score, but Alfred University quickly responded with a goal from Forte in the opening minutes of the first quarter. The Gators took a brief lead before an assist from Connor DiDominick (Bath, NY/Haverling) to Kay equalized the score. The Saxons took their first lead of the game after Hauman found the back of the net. A goal from Forte in the final seconds of the first quarter had AU leading 5-3 entering the second quarter.
 
A man-down goal from Dawson Felenchak (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) opened scoring for the Saxons in the early stages of the second quarter. A quick breakaway following the faceoff resulted in a goal from Kaelan Winnky (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) to extend the lead. Eight additional goals from the Saxons between Cartwright, Forte, Hauman, Caleb DuBois (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora) and Adrian Romero (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) had Alfred University leading 14-3 at the break.
 
The Saxons carried their offensive momentum into the second half, as an assist from Justin Mosher (Hilton, NY/Hilton) to Hauman distanced the lead for AU. Kay and Jason Berardicurti (Rochester, NY/Penfield) each followed up with a goal of their own before the Gators answered with a goal. Kay found the back of the net once again before Russell Sage quickly followed up with a goal. Shane Cubala (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) scored twice, while Hauman and Kay scored once in the closing minutes of the third quarter, as the Saxons led, 23-5.
 
Russell Sage scored once more in the fourth quarter, but Alfred University responded with goals from Mosher and Peter J. Colburn (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford Senior) to secure the victory.
 
"We need to keep focusing on shooting well," Lockner said. "The games we did not perform well are the games we shoot poorly. It was nice having some guys back from injury as they performed well today. Drew is playing well right now, so I'm impressed with his play."
 
Alfred University will continue their Empire 8 competition portion of the season when they travel to play Nazareth College on Wednesday at 4:00 PM.
