Men's Lacrosse Drops Road Contest to Nazareth

ROCHESTER, NY – An early deficit for the Alfred University men's lacrosse team resulted in a 22-8 loss to Nazareth College on Saturday afternoon from NLPA Field.

The Saxons (7-3, 1-1 Empire 8) faced 65 shots, while the Golden Flyers (5-7, 2-1 Empire 8) surrendered 21 turnovers.

Kevin Matson (Chenango Bridge, NY/Chenango Forks) led Alfred University with two goals across a team-high 11 shots. Josh Hauman (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) scored twice while dishing one assist. Noah Soriano (Valley Cottage, NY/Nyack) finished with two goals from three shots on goal.

"We did play our physical style of play today and so did they," Head Coach Jason Lockner said. "That is part of who we are."

After the Golden Flyers took an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter, a goal from Hauman opened scoring for the Saxons. Moments later, Hauman dished an assist to Matson to tie the game with 6:31 remaining in the first quarter. Nazareth found the back of the net on three occasions to carry a 5-2 lead entering the second quarter.

The Golden Flyers scored twice before Hauman recorded his second goal of the afternoon. Nazareth found two additional goals before Soriano scored for AU. Nazareth rattled off four unanswered goals to close out the first half, as Alfred University trailed 13-4.

Nazareth scored within the first minute of the second half, but AU quickly answered after Justin Mosher (Hilton, NY/Hilton) dished an assist to Matson to offset the damage. The Golden Flyers picked up four goals in the third quarter, as the Saxons trailed 18-5 entering the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Nazareth scored four times before Caleb DuBois (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora) found the back of the net for AU. Additional goals from DuBois and Soriano in the final minutes were not enough before the end of the game.

"We need to come and play fast on Saturday and bounce back from this loss," Lockner said. "The season goes by quickly, but we have important conference games coming up."

Alfred University will look to get back in the win column when they host Hartwick College on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
