HOUGHTON, NY – The Alfred University men's tennis team continued their Empire 8 portion of the season with a 9-0 loss to Houghton College on Wednesday afternoon from the Kerr-Pegula Field House.
"We have been talking to Sam Craver about the type of players and team we want to be," Head Coach
Jordan Crouch said. "Words like "grit" and "commitment" came up multiple times. Today was a chance to show that despite coming out in a 0-3 hole in doubles, we fought back and battled in singles with a team that is a strong conference contender."
The efforts of
Matthew Hibbert (Oswego, NY/Oswego) and
Mike Roberts (Alfred Station, NY/Alfred-Almond) resulted in two points for the Saxons (1-9, 0-3 Empire 8) during their time from No. 2 in doubles action. In singles play, Roberts picked up three points during the first set from No. 3.
Logan Cross (Olean, NY/Olean) also recorded three points during his first set from No. 1.
"Both Houghton and Fisher played a close match recently, so we know that we have to take a big step forward and start winning those big points that we get ourselves to in matches," Crouch said. "We can play with these teams, we have to just start taking that next step."
Alfred University will next return home to host St. John Fisher College on Saturday with matches set to begin at 1:00 PM.
