ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's lacrosse team relied on 10 goals in the second half in their 12-5 victory over Lycoming College on Tuesday evening from Yunevich Stadium.
The Saxons (4-0) finished 23-for-27 in clear attempts, while the Warriors (2-3) were limited to 30 shots in their efforts.
Kevin Matson (Chenango Bridge, NY/Chenango Forks) led the Saxons with a team-high five goals across 11 shots on goal.
Drew Cartwright (Elmira, NY/Elmira) totaled four points from three goals and one assist.
Scott Kimiecik (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) recorded eight saves for AU.
"I'm proud of the effort from our team tonight," Head Coach
Jason Lockner said. "They didn't panic and kept their composure. We were dominating all categories except for the one that mattered the most. It was a matter of time. Kevin shot well and hats off to the Lycoming goalie for his effort in the first half."
Both sides held their own on the defensive end in the early moments of the first quarter, as the Warriors found their first goal at the 3:52 mark. Lycoming scored once more before an assist from
Josh Hauman (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) to Matson put the Saxons on the scoreboard. A goal from Cartwright at the 12:59 mark of the second quarter tied the game for AU. The Warriors scored in a man-up situation in the closing minutes of the first half, as they carried a 3-2 lead over the Saxons at the break.
The Saxons wasted no time scoring to open the second half, as a pass from
Paul Forte (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) to Matson tied the game. Shortly after, a goal from Hauman gave Alfred their first lead of the game. A man-up goal for Forte extended AU's lead. Goals from
Noah Soriano (Valley Cottage, NY/Nyack) and Cartwright gave the Saxons a 7-3 lead entering the fourth quarter. The offense for AU relied on Matson to begin the fourth quarter, as he scored two additional goals within the first seven minutes of action. Both Cartwright and Matson scored once more to distance the lead. The Warriors scored twice more, but ran out of time on a potential comeback effort.
"We are working hard to focus on the things that need to be cleaned up on the field," Lockner said. "We need to play at a faster rate and get our transition work in this week."
Alfred University will next travel to play King's College on Saturday at 4:00 PM.
