ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's lacrosse team opened the 2022 season at Yunevich Stadium with a shutout win over soon-to-be Empire 8 foe, Medaille College on Wednesday night, defeating the Mavericks, 22-0.
Josh Hauman (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) scored what would ultimately become the game-winning goal off an assist from
Jason Berardicurti (Rochester, NY/Penfield) just over two minutes into the opening quarter. The goal started a 10-0 run in the first quarter. The Saxons (1-0, 0-0 Empire 8) added seven goals in the second, two in the third and three in the fourth.
Scott Kimiecik (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) was credited with the win as he made one save in goal before
Quinn Sullivan (Elmira, NY/Elmira) came in for the second half, making one save as well.
"Guys did a nice job tonight. They hustled all over the ground balls as they have been doing in the preseason," Head Coach
Jason Lockner said. "Impressed with the freshman play of
Shane Cubala. Chris Dietrich did a great job on ground balls tonight as well. The office played unselfish. We are just working hard to get better every day."
Justin Mosher (Hilton, NY/Hilton) led the way with nine points from a team-high four goals and a team-high five assists. He had five shots on goal for the evening while tacking on four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Hauman and
Johnathan Kay (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) joined Mosher in the scoring fest as each of them had hat-trick performances on the evening while Hauman added two assists.
Drew Cartwright (Elmira, NY/Elmira) and
Paul Forte (Greece, NY/Greece Athena) both had three assists on the evening.
14 Saxon lacrosse players had one or more point on the evening, including multiple points from seven of those players.
Cartwright also led AU in ground balls with 12 while he was second in caused turnovers with three.
Ryan Schwanz (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) led the Saxons in the causes as he had four.
Kaelan Winkky (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) had a game-high 15-for-15 on faceoff opportunities while gathering seven ground balls as well.
James Connelly (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) followed with a 6-for-8 performance on the starts.
The Saxons will next return to play at Yunevich Stadium on Saturday, February 26 at 1:00pm as they host the Golden Eagles of SUNY Brockport before looking towards their games during Spring Break.
