WEBSTER, NY – The Alfred University men's swimming & diving team finished day one of the Allegheny Empire Swim & Dive Championships on Wednesday evening as the fourth place team at the Webster Aquatics Center.
The Saxons' highlight was the 200-yard medley relay team of
William LaMastus (Maumee, OH/Anthony Wayne), Emiliano Terrazas (La Paz, Bolivia/Saint Andrew's), Colby Watkins (New Orleans, LA/St. Martin's Episcopal) and
Alessandro Lagos Canales (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/Escuela e Instituo Lincoln) as the group combined for an overall second place finishing time of 1:33.94. The time was the top time in the Empire 8, making the Saxons' relay team the Empire 8 Champions in the event as they defeated Nazareth College by almost two seconds.
In the same event, the Saxons' B-team of
Phillip Volaski (Poughquag, NY/Arlington), Justin Jarmer (Flagstaff, AZ/Northland Preparatory Academy), Wade LaMastus (Maumee, OH/Anthony Wayne) and
Paul Tuttle (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit) had the top finish in their heat, swimming a time of 1:37.69, scoring another 22 points to go along with the 42 from the A-team. "It was a great start to the meet! We got a quick glimpse into what is to come over the next three days and I think we are all pretty excited," Head Coach
Brian Striker '00 said. "All of our relays tonight had great swims from top to bottom. We are really looking forward to getting the individual swimming and diving started tomorrow!"
The 800-yard freestyle relay team of
Fernando Lagos (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/Escuela e Instituo Lincoln), Lagos Canales,
Jordan Fixsen (Fairport, NY/Penfield) and
William LaMastus finished fifth with a time of 7:12.41 (third in the Empire 8). The B-team of
Andrew Yates (Naples, NY/Naples), Jarmer, Volaski and
Wade LaMastus took ninth with a 14-point time of 7:28.98 to close out the evening.
The Saxons have three more days of the Allegheny Empire Swimming & Diving Championships with preliminary events in the morning sessions and finals in the evenings.
