HOUGHTON, NY – The Alfred University men's basketball team played well on both sides of the floor, resulting in a 73-34 victory over Houghton College on Saturday afternoon from the Nielsen Center.
The 34 points given up by the Saxons (10-7, 3-5 Empire 8) was the lowest total allowed since the 1948-49 season.
Cole Eells (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) led the Saxons with 18 points to go with five rebounds.
Brewster Marshall (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) totaled 18 points, eight boards, four seals, and four blocks.
Elliot Bowen (Salamanca, NY/Ellicotville) finished with a double-double performance that consisted of 16 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
"We approached today's game a little differently," Head Coach
Erich Kaempffe said. "We wanted to try and stop the things they did well in the first game earlier this week."
Houghton jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the opening half, but four quick points from Bowen tied the game. A successful layup from Eells at the 14:15 mark of the first half gave Alfred University their first lead. A 13-0 run by the Saxons had them leading by as many as 11 points. Marshall scored four of the team's final six points to close out the first half, as Alfred University led 34-15 at the break. The Saxons continued to pile on points to begin the second half, as 12 combined points between Bowen and Eells across the first seven minutes of action had the Saxons leading by 28 points. A 13-1 run by AU distanced their leading and ultimately sealed the game.
"We're going to get a little rest and then get back to work for a tough Keuka team," Kaempffe said.
Alfred University will next return home to host Keuka College on Tuesday with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 PM.
