Men's Basketball Comes Up Short Against Nazareth, 75-66

ROCHESTER, NY – Late scoring from Nazareth College resulted in a 75-66 win over the Alfred University men's basketball team on Friday evening.

The Saxons (10-7, 3-5 Empire 8) shot 45.3 percent from the field, while holding the Golden Flyers (15-1, 7-0 Empire 8) to 18.2 percent from three-point range.

Darren Miller (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse) matched his career-high with 20 points to go with seven rebounds. Mike Schmidt (Olean, NY/Olean) finished with 12 points and two assists. Brewster Marshall (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) totaled 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

"We're playing really hard and getting closer to where we want to be," Head Coach Erich Kaempffe said. "We're excited to hopefully play a full 40 minutes tomorrow."

Consecutive layups from Marshall and Elliot Bowen (Salamanca, NY/Ellicotville) to open the first half gave the Saxons the early lead. The Golden Flyers retaliated with a 12-0 run, which was ended by a layup from Cole Eells (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca). A three-point shot from Casey Curran (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) was followed by a layup from Miller, as the Saxons took a brief 25-24 lead. A 7-1 run by Nazareth was snapped by a three-point shot from Miller. A three-point shot from Kevin Durkin (Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph's Collegiate) moments later gave the Saxons the lead with 1:05 remaining in the half. Four quick points from the Golden Flyers were answered by a three-point shot from Schmidt in the final seconds, as the two sides went into halftime with a 37-37 score.

Marshall scored AU's first four points in the second half to take the early lead. A 7-0 run by Nazareth had the Saxons trailing by three points with 14:02 remaining in the game. Following a pair of successful free throws by the Golden Flyers, Durkin hit a three-point shot from the corner to leave the Saxons trailing by two points with 12 minutes remaining. Moments later, a three-point shot by Nazareth put Alfred University in a nine-point deficit with 9:36 left in regulation; their largest disadvantage of the game. A combined effort between Schmidt and Miller resulted in a 6-0 run, as the Saxons were behind by three points with 6:48 to play. Nazareth continued to hit their shots, but Miller scored four straight points for AU as the team trailed by one possession with 2:09 remaining in the game. Five quick points from the Golden Flyers extended their lead to eight points and ultimately sealed the game.

"Back-to-back games are about the players," Kaempffe said. "I like our players and we're really excited for tomorrow."

Alfred University will next travel to play Houghton College on Saturday with tip-off at 4:00 PM.
