HOUGHTON, NY – The Alfred University women's track & field team competed at the Houghton Highlander Invitational on Saturday afternoon with a top finish by
Olivia Gilbert (Ontario, NY/Wayne Central) as she won the 800-meter run.
Gilbert ran a 2:31.17 to defeat the second place runner from Rochester Institute of Technology,
Sierra Kegler, by over a second. She claimed the win against 20 other runners from NCAA Division I like Canisius College and St. Bonaventure University and Division II like Daemen College, Mansfield University and Le Moyne College.
"Olivia's race was a lot of fun to watch and it was very exciting to see her not only win the event, but she did it with a personal best time as well," Head Coach
Dr. Angie Taylor said. "We had a lot of our roster studying abroad during the winter break and most of them just returned. So instead of throwing them into a competitive mix, we had them ease in with a practice today but we'll see more of our Saxons compete next week at RIT. We're very excited to see what we can do moving forward."
The Saxons' 4x200-meter relay team of
Sara Badeau (Canaseraga, NY/Canaseraga Central), Megan Jones (Far Rockaway, NY/White Plains), Olivia Chamberlin (Holland, NY/Holland) and
Mackenzie Grosskopf (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) finished fourth with a time of 2:14.86 to close out the top finishes for AU on Saturday.
The Saxons will next be back in action on Friday, January 28 when they travel to Rochester Institute of Technology.
