SYRACUSE, NY – The Alfred University men's swimming & diving team had its first competition in the pool in 2022, as they fell on the road to NCAA Division II Le Moyne College on Tuesday afternoon, 132-89.
The Saxons had an early meet lead as the 200-yard medley relay team of
Phillip Volaski (Poughquag, NY/Arlington), Justin Jarmer (Flagstaff, AZ/Northland Preparatory Academy), Emiliano Terrazas (La Paz, Bolivia/St. Andrew's) and
Andrew Yates (Naples, NY/Naples) won with a time of 1:42.93.
"It has been a rough week or so for this program with a plethora of things hindering the ability to have our whole team available for competition," Head Coach
Brian Striker '00 said. "We were missing quite a few student-athletes today, but thankfully we have some depth and talent willing to do some different things to help the team put something on the table. I think for what we were able to put in the pool today, we did great!"
Jordan Fixsen (Fairport, NY/Penfield), Jarmer and Yates all finished one after the other in the 200-yard freestyle with Fixsen leading the way with a time of 1:55.22, finishing third in the event. Jarmer swam a 1:57.74 and Yates finished with a time of 1:59.76.
Nathan Sponenberg (Bloomsburg, PA/Central Columbia) was the top finisher for the Saxons in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.79, good enough for third place.
Terrazas continued his streak of strong performances in the individual medley events as he won the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:04.80, defeating the rest of the field by almost a complete three seconds. Volaski took third in the contest with a time of 2:09.27 and was followed by
Colin Schultz (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) and his fourth place finish of 2:12.99.
Fynn Vossler (Livonia, NY/Livonia) and Schultz earned a pair of contested places as the duo took third and fourth, respectively in the 100-yard butterfly with Vossler swimming a 1:00.33 and Schultz marking a flat, 1:01.
Volaski took a second place finish from the Dolphins as he swam a 57.52 in the 100-yard backstroke. Sponenberg took fourth in the event with a time of 1:01.15. Just one event later, Fixsen earned a second place finish as well, clocking in a time of 5:11.78 in the 500-yard freestyle, just seconds behind the first place finisher's time of 5:08.50.
Jarmer legitimately won the 100-yard breaststroke with a top time of 1:01.99, despite Le Moyne entering its competitors into the exhibition category of the results. The top time from the Dolphins in that event was a 1:02.37.
Tyler Kemmet (Gloversville, NY/Gloversville) and his time of 1:04.53 would have finished third overall in the six-person race.
"It is always a good feeling to get back into the swing of things after break, to jump start the last leg of our season," Coach Striker said. "We are excited to get more of the team back for our meet against Utica Friday."
The Saxons will next host Utica College on Friday, January 14 at 1:00pm from the McLane Natatorium.
