Alfred, NY- The Alfred University women's tennis team came up short in their season-opener versus Oneonta by a 9-0 score on Friday from the Dr. Heissan '63 Tennis Courts.
The Saxons fall to a 0-1 record to begin the season, while the Red Dragons improve to a 1-0 record.
First-year
Abigail Call (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) won the lone set for Alfred University from the No. 4 spot, winning her second set 7-6 (9).
"It was the first ever collegiate match for some of our team," Head Coach
Jordan Crouch said. "For others, it was their first competitive action in over a year. Lauren and Abigail gave really gritty finishes. It was great to see Abigail battle back and win the second set in a tie-breaker and then her opponent on the ropes in the third set super tie-breaker."
Senior
Lauren Boshart (Oswego, NY/Oswego) competed from the No. 6 spot, nearly securing a win during her first set.
"Oneonta is one of the best teams we will play all year," Crouch said. "They are really strong from the top to bottom and are very well coached. This was a great test to see what we need to work on and where we can improve upon for our next matches."
The Saxons face a quick turnaround, hosting D'Youville College in their home-opener on Saturday at 1pm.Â
