Alfred, NY - The Alfred University women's tennis team dropped a 3-6 decision to D'Youville College on Saturday from the William T. Brown Tennis Courts to open its home schedule.
The Saxons (0-2, 0-0 Empire 8) picked up their first point thanks to the doubles play of first-year
Abigail Call (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) and sophomore
Anna Gwozdz (South Wales, NY/Iroquois) from the No. 2 spot with an 8-3 win.
"Anna played really well today from start to finish," Head Coach
Jordan Crouch said. "With her experience and leadership, she's going to be a huge asset to the team this year."
Gwozdz continued her success in singles play, winning 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3. Sophomore
Alex Rossen (Charlton, NY/The Darrow School) claimed a win in contested fashion, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 at No. 4, rounding out the team scoring efforts on the day.
"I told the team last night we were going to be better and learn from that experience," Crouch said. "We were better from that match. I feel no differently today. We took a big step forward and proved to ourselves that we deserve to be out there with any team. Today is going to be the first big step towards season-long success for our roster."
The Saxons will next travel to play University of Pittsburgh at Bradford on Tuesday at 4:00 pm.
