Youngberg Shines in 6-3 Loss to Cortland

ALFRED, NY- The Alfred University women's tennis team was successful in their doubles play, but came up short in a 3-6 loss to SUNY Cortland on Friday afternoon from the William T. Brown Tennis Courts.

First-year Macy Youngberg (Falconer, NY/Falconer Central) picked up her first two collegiate victories with the Saxons from No. 1 doubles alongside sophomore Anna Gwozdz (South Wales, NY/Iroquois) and No. 2 singles. Her and Gwozdz had a competitive match on hand, edging out Isabella Bonapace and Logan Streety, 8-6 to start the afternoon. In singles action, Youngberg only needed two sets to defeat Streety, winning 6-4, 6-4.

The combination of junior Isabelle Benoit (Bow, NH/Tilton School) and sophomore Alex Rossen (Charlton, NY/The Darrow School) outlasted Katie Barber and Karlie Cubino from No. 3 doubles, 8-6. Rossen appeared at the No. 4 singles spot and forced a third set against Preston Fuerbacher, falling 6-3, 4-6 and 3-6.

"Today was our best doubles effort I've seen from our team all year," Head Coach Jordan Crouch said. "We played aggressive and full of confidence and were able to pull out a couple big wins. Congrats to Macy for getting her first two collegiate wins in big fashion today. I also want to give a shoutout to Alexis Giordano for patiently waiting for her match today and not being able to compete. She cheered on her team all afternoon and we wouldn't be where we are without her dedication to the program each day."

Senior Lauren Boshart (Oswego, NY/Oswego) competed well in singles play from the No. 3 spot, winning her first set over Vyda Van Denburg in her 6-3, 2-6, 2-6 effort.

"We know we have the ability, so now we just need to focus on getting across the finish line and collect some big wins," Crouch said. "If we can compete tomorrow with the same aggression and confidence, I think we have a great shot against a quality Oswego team."

The Saxons will face a quick turnaround, competing against Oswego State on Saturday at 12pm.
