ALFRED, NY –
Kayla Silverstein (North Chili, NY/Churchville-Chili) and
Jacey Palmgreen (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) earned both of the Empire 8 Women's Player of the Week awards on Monday in an official announcement by Associate Commissioner,
Joe Venniro.
Â
Silverstein was named the Empire 8 Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week on Monday. She helped the Saxons go 2-0 on the week, defeating SUNY Brockport and Kings College (PA). She totaled two goals and one assist on the week. Her first goal opened up the 3-2 win over the Golden Eagles as she finished with two shots on goal in the game. Then, in the Saxons' home-opener, she fired one shot for the third goal of the game while assisting on the first, all in the second half of the 3-1 win over the Monarchs.
Â
Palmgreen was named the Empire 8 Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. She played every minute this past week. On Wednesday, she helped the Saxons not only keep Brockport and their offensive opportunities away from being on-goal threats (50% of all shots from Brockport were off target) but also recording an assist on the second goal of the game for AU. On Saturday, in the Saxons' home-opener, Palmgreen and the defense kept the Monarchs to only six shots (three on goal) and only one goal. She was credited with the game-winning goal in the 64
th minute of play when a ball rolled back to her, giving her time to prep for the 35-yard boot to find the upper left corner of the net.
Â
Palmgreen was also named a Saxon of the Week along with
Kalum Holbrook (Atlanta, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) as both Palmgreen and Silverstein were joined by Holbrook in the weekly Empire 8 honors, Holbrook being the Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week.
Â
Silverstein, Palmgreen and the Saxons will next head to William Smith College on Wednesday, September 15 for a 5:00pm non-conference matchup against the #2 preseason nationally-ranked team in the country.
