Women's Soccer Celebrates Senior Day With 2-1 Win Over Gators

ALFRED, NY – A pair of second-half goals lifted the Alfred University women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Russell Sage College on Saturday afternoon at Yunevich Stadium

"Today was a special day for our program," Head Coach Craig Yanni said. "We had the chance to recognize all seven of our outgoing seniors who have made an impact on our program. They certainly are leaving the program better than they found it. We did a great job competing in the second half and coming away with a win."

Prior to kickoff, Alfred University Athletics honored seven seniors playing in their final season with the Saxons: Amber Bates (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt), Isabelle Dennis (Livonia, NY/Livonia), Sidney Khuns (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport), Meghan Lyle (Portville, NY/Portville Central), Lola Prevost (Pelham, Ontario, Canada/Notre Dame), Lily Schena (Olean, NY/Olean) and Molly Stainbrook (Clarence, NY/Clarence).

The Saxons faced an early challenge, defending a corner kick and a shot attempt from the Gators during the opening 10 minutes. Russell Sage broke through in the 13th minute with a long-range strike to take a 1-0 lead. Alfred University generated eight shots in the first half, including three on target, but entered halftime trailing by one.

Alfred University found its equalizer in the 57th minute when Mara Gloo (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) scored the first goal of her collegiate career on a contested attempt. Reagan Hunt (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) took over in goal for the Saxons in the second half, recording two saves to help keep the contest level.

In the 69th minute, Aviana Petrizzo (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) delivered the decisive goal, netting her second goal of the fall season to give the Saxons a 2-1 advantage. Alfred University's defense held strong down the stretch, limiting the Gators to no shots on goal over the final 25 minutes to secure the victory.
