ALBANY, NY- Aggressive shot-taking from Sage College resulted in a 2-0 win over the Alfred University men's soccer team on Monday from the Plumeri Sports Complex. The Saxons continue their spring season with a 0-4 (0-4 Empire 8) overall record, while the Gators improve to a 3-1 (3-1 Empire 8) standing.
Alfred was led by sophomore forward
Justin Eaton (Williamson, NY/Williamson), who forced three shots, one of which was on goal. First-year forward
Henry Smith (Manassas, VA/Lancaster) recorded two shots with one being on target. First-year goalkeeper
Daniel Koenig (William Junction, NY/John Jay) finished with seven saves for the Saxons.
"Tonight was a hard-fought match on our end," Head Coach
Tracy Blake said. "We played well and just need to create chances on the attack."
The defense for Alfred stood tall to open the first half, denying Sage's first eight shot attempts through 30 minutes of action. The Gators scored their first goal at the 32:27 mark with a rebound shot. Koenig recorded one more save before heading to the break with a 1-0 deficit.
Alfred began the second half with two early corner kicks, but couldn't find the back of the net. A header from Sage at the 71:22 mark permitted a 2-0 advantage for the Gators. A late shot attempt by first-year midfielder
Jesus Macias (Reno, NV/Spanish Springs) was saved by Sage, as the Saxons couldn't find late momentum on the offensive end.
"We've got one game left in the regular season before the playoffs," Blake said. "We're going to continue to learn, fight and compete."
The Saxons will next host St. John Fisher College to conclude their regular season on Saturday from Yunevich Stadium. The first whistle is scheduled for 5pm.
