Saxons Fall To Cardinals In Contested Regular Season Finale

ALFRED, NY- A late goal in the second half from St. John Fisher College resulted in a 2-1 victory over the Alfred University men's soccer team on Saturday from Yunevich Stadium. Alfred (0-5, 0-5 Empire 8) forced 10 shots while earning two corner kick opportunities. The Saxons drew 11 penalties against the Cardinals (3-1, 3-1 Empire 8).

The Saxons were led by sophomore forward Justin Eaton (Williamson, NY/Williamson), who scored the team's lone goal. Sophomore defender Michael Walther (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit) finished with one shot on goal. First-year goalkeeper Daniel Koenig (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay) recorded four saves for Alfred.

"This was our cleanest match from start to finish," Head Coach Tracy Blake said. "I'm proud of the effort we put in tonight. If we eliminate the mistakes we had in the first half, then this could have been a different turnout."

The Saxons maintained consistency on defense in the first half, rejecting St. John Fisher's first seven shots. A deflection went into the back of the net for the Cardinals at the 25:07 mark, forcing Alfred to play from behind. Neither side placed a shot on goal for the remainder of the half, placing the Saxons at a 1-0 deficit at the break.

Alfred found their opening in the second half, as a shot from Eaton inside the goalie box tied the match. The Cardinals took back their lead just moments later after a breakaway score. St. John Fisher managed to keep the ball away from the Saxons in the closing minutes, securing the win.

"The future is bright for us," Blake said. "We have a young roster with a lot of promise. At this rate, we are excited to see what comes next."
