HOUGHTON, NY – Sophomore
Wes Dennison (Almond, NY/Alfred-Almond) won his fifth match of the season, highlighting the Alfred University men's tennis team effort in an 8-1 loss to Empire 8-leading Houghton, in league action from the Kerr-Pegula Athletics Center Wednesday evening.
The Saxons fall to 2-7 overall and 1-5 in Empire 8 action with two conference matches remaining. AU will finish the road portion of the regular season on Friday, heading to St. John Fisher for a 4 p.m. start. Houghton (7-3, 7-0 Empire 8) remained undefeated in conference action with the win.
Dennison continues his dominance near the bottom of the Saxon lineup, winning his fourth straight singles match with a 6-4, 6-3 straight set victory over Adam Brown at No. 6. He also teamed up with first year
Sam Cohen (Brighton, NY/Brighton), as the pair earned six games in an 8-6 loss to Brown and Ben McKay at third doubles.
The Highlanders would yield just three games in first and second doubles and swept five of the six singles matches in straight sets to earn the team victory and remain undefeated in conference action.
"Congrats to Wes for battling through his match and coming up with a great win today," said head coach
Jordan Crouch. "He played awesome and was able to outlast his opponent in a long two-setter!"
