Saxons Drop Hotly Contested Match at Fisher

ROCHESTER, NY – The Alfred University men's tennis team dropped a hotly-contested match to St. John Fisher College, falling by a 6-3 score in Empire 8 action from the Mendon Racquet and Pool Club Friday afternoon.

The Saxons (2-8, 1-6 Empire 8) will wrap up the regular season with a home matchup against Utica College on Saturday, May 1 at 1 p.m. and will either be the fourth or fifth seed in the upcoming Empire 8 Tournament, which begins next week. St. John Fisher (3-5, 3-4 Empire 8) wrapped up the third seed and a first-round bye with a win.

"Congrats to Logan for getting on the scoreboard this year," said head coach Jordan Crouch. "Great matches all around. Having four singles matches go the distance shows just how close this match was. Proud of how much we fought and have grown from our previous matchup with Fisher. Quick turnaround for us as we take on Utica tomorrow!"

Senior Logan Cross (Olean, NY/Olean) earned his first singles win of the season on Friday, outlasting Cameron Campbell in a three-set victory at No. 3. After dropping the first set to fall behind in the match, Cross overcame, taking the next two sets for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 triumph. Sophomore Wes Dennison (Almond, NY/Alfred-Almond) continued his hot run of late, winning his fifth consecutive match with a 6-1, 6-4 straight set victory over Andy Cegielski at No. 6.

The Saxons won one of three doubles matches, with the team of senior Ryan Brown (Olean, NY/Olean) and first year Isaac Little (Alfred, NY/Alfred-Almond) earning a solid 8-3 victory over Kyle Gorman and Jordan O'Connell at the top spot.

Three other singles matches went the distance, as Brown dropped a 4-6, 6-4, 5-7 heartbreak to Sean Danahy at No. 1, first year Sam Cohen (Brighton, NY/Brighton) started strong in a 6-2, 4-6, 0-6 loss to O'Connell at No. 4, and senior Adam Shearer (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) also took the first set in a 6-4, 3-6, 3-6 loss to Anthony Molosag at No. 5.
