ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University softball team swept the Empire 8 Weekly Awards as made official in an announcement by Associate Commissioner,
Joe Venniro on Monday afternoon, with
Ashley Lugo (Hesperia, CA/Oak Hills) winning Player of the Week and
Jessica Wilcox (Forestville, NY/Pine Valley) winning Pitcher of the Week.
Â
Junior Lugo helped the Saxons have an impressive 5-1 week with sweeps over Fredonia and Ithaca College and a split against Utica College. Lugo had hits in every single game and a stolen base in all but one game with tying a season-high of three against Utica College. She totaled nine stolen bases on the week, 10 hits, eight runs, nine RBI, two triples and two doubles. Lugo was struck out only once as she was hit by pitch three times and walked just as much. Defensively, Lugo had eight putouts at shortstop with five assists and only two errors.
Â
Graduate Wilcox pitched in three games and had double-digit strikeouts in all three contests as she tied her own school record and then broke her own school record just three days after in single game strikeouts. Wilcox could have possibly broke her school record of 14 strikeouts in a single game at Fredonia but the Saxons posted a five-inning win against the Blue Devils with 12 strikeouts. The very next day, Wilcox tied her record with 14 strikeouts in a win against Ithaca College. On Saturday, she finally broke the record with 15 strikeouts against the Pioneers of Utica College, only allowing two hits and one walk. Wilcox is still undefeated on the season with a 6-0 record. Wednesday's win over Ithaca College was her fourth time getting 14 strikeouts in a single game before she topped that on Saturday.
When COVID-19 shut down the 2020 season while the Saxons were on Spring Break, Lugo and Wilcox ended the last week of Empire 8 awards with a sweep as well.
Â
Wilcox and Lugo were joined on Monday by the announcement of women's track & field's
Ana Ion (Bucharest, Romania/Episcopal School of Jacksonville) earning Field Athlete of the Week, women's lacrosse's Brenna Turner (Bentonville, AR/Bentonville) earning Player of the Week and men's lacrosse's
Scott Kimiecik (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) earning Goalie of the Week. Wilcox was also named one of the Saxons of the Week as she was joined by women's volleyball's
Sarah Raeman (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) on Monday.
Â
Lugo, Wilcox and the Saxons will next head to St. John Fisher College on Tuesday, April 13 for an Empire 8 doubleheader with games at 3:00pm and 5:00pm(approx.).
