HOUGHTON, NY- Consistent shot-taking from the Alfred University men's soccer team wasn't enough, as Houghton College won by a 4-0 score on Monday from Burke Field. The Saxons continue their spring season with a 0-3 (0-3 Empire 8) overall record, while the Highlanders improve to 3-1 (2-1 Empire 8).
Alfred totaled a team-high 18 shots, six of which were on goal. The Saxons earned six corner kick opportunities.
"We felt like that was the best half we've had all season," Head Coach
Tracy Blake said. "We became frustrated at times with our inability to move the ball in a positive direction."
Sophomore forward
Justin Eaton (Williamson, NY/Williamson) totaled a team-high seven shots. Â Sophomore midfielder
Sailo Lian (Syracuse, NY/William Nottingham), first-year midfielder
Jesus Macias (Reno, NV/Spanish Springs),
Henry Smith (Manassas, VA/Lancaster), and sophomore midfielder
Matthew Wedzik (North East, PA/North East) were each responsible for a shot on goal. First-year goalkeeper
Daniel Koenig (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay) tallied six saves for the Saxons.
Alfred stood tall defensively in the first half, rejecting Houghton's first eight corner kick opportunities. The Highlanders got on the board at the 36:14 mark, sending the Saxons into a 1-0 deficit at halftime. The Saxons remained persistent on offense out of the break, but Houghton scored three additional goals in the second half to put the game out of reach.
"We have grown after each game this season," Blake said. "We have been getting more competitive and look to continue to trend that way to close out the regular season.
The Saxons next return home against St. John Fisher College on Saturday from Yunevich Stadium at 5pm.
