Saxons Come Up Short Versus Nazareth

ROCHESTER, NY - A strong offensive performance from Nazareth College led to a 77-54 win over the Alfred University women's basketball team on Tuesday from Robert A. Kidera Gymnasium. The Saxons dropped to a 2-4 (2-3 Empire 8) overall record this season, while the Golden Flyers improved to 7-2 (6-1 Empire 8).

The Saxons relied on senior guard Lyndsey McCoy (Middleburgh, NY/Middleburgh), as she finished with a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double performance.  Junior guard Allison O'Toole (Simi Valley, CA/Simi Valley) totaled 10 points and four rebounds. Senior guard Gillian Flint (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) added eight points as Alfred finished 23.2 percent (16-of-69) from the field.

Junior forward Jadyn Adams paved the way for the Golden Flyers, finishing with 20 points to go with eight boards. Junior guard Caley Cornwell added 13 points, as Nazareth shot 43.3 percent (29-of-67) from the field.

"We didn't do a great job at attacking the offensive glass in the first half," Head Coach Mike Moskowitz said. "That led to easy transition looks from inside and out."

The Saxons relied on deep shots from first-year Leah Harkenrider (Hornell, NY/Hornell) and Grace Rittenhouse (Dansville, NY/Dansville) to open with a 6-0 lead. A 12-0 run by Nazareth to end the first quarter placed Alfred in an early 24-13 deficit.

Three-point shots from O'Toole and Flint to open the second quarter gave the Saxons early life. The Golden Flyers retaliated with a 19-1 run to close the half, resulting in a 49-26 lead at the break.

A strong second half from Nazareth kept Alfred out of reach, as they led by as many as 31 points.

"We have to work on our ability to match up in the transition and contain the dribble one-on-one," Moskowitz said. "We competed a lot better in the second half on both ends."

The Saxons continue their spring season with a home contest against Nazareth on Monday with tip-off scheduled for 7pm.
