ALFRED, NY- A last-second basket from Nazareth College resulted in a 62-60 win over the Alfred University women's basketball team on Monday from the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena. The Saxons continue the spring season with a 2-5 (2-4 Empire 8) overall record, while the Golden Flyers improve to 8-2 (7-1 Empire 8).
Alfred maintained control for a majority of the game, leading after each of the first three quarters. The Saxons forced 19 turnovers and finished 41.2 percent (7-of-17) from deep.
The Saxons were led by senior guard
Gillian Flint (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford), who totaled a team-high 18 points and seven rebounds. Senior guard
Lyndsey McCoy (Middleburgh, NY/Middleburgh Central) ended with 13 points and five boards. Junior guard
Allison O'Toole (Simi Valley, CA/Simi Valley) added 11 points, as Alfred shot 40 percent (24-of-60) from the field.
The Golden Flyers relied on junior forward Jaydn Adams, who finished with a 22-point, 10-rebound double-double performance. Sophomore guard Ryann Stefaniak contributed with 11 points, as Nazareth finished 36.6 percent (26-of-71) from the field. Â
"I thought we made a great adjustment when it came to transition defense and being patient on offense," Head Coach
Mike Moskowitz said. "Our team put themselves in a great spot to compete. They played with focus, energy, and intensity. How we played today in comparison to how we played Nazareth last time around was like night and day."
An opening 8-3 run from Nazareth didn't last long, as shots from Flint and McCoy resulted in the Saxons leading 14-10 at the end of the first quarter. A three-point shot from first-year guard
Leah Harkenrider (Hornell, NY/Hornell) continued to give Alfred momentum. An additional jump shot from sophomore guard
Rebecca Jewett (Nyack, NY/Nyack) had the Saxons leading by as many as 10 points. Alfred led Nazareth by a 29-23 margin at the break. Â
O'Toole guided the Saxons in the third quarter, scoring seven of the team's 20 points. An additional four points from first-year guard
Grace Rittenhouse (Dansville, NY/Dansville)Â had Alfred holding onto a 49-40 advantage entering the fourth quarter.
Nazareth continued to chip away at Alfred's lead throughout the final quarter, eventually tying it up with a three-point shot with 18 seconds remaining. The Golden Flyers got the ball back and scored the go-ahead layup with four seconds on the clock.
"I'm proud of our team's competition level and the positive energy they brought," Moskowitz said. "They were hungry to go out and win and honestly deserved to win. Hopefully the next time we're in that situation, I can do a better job as their leader to help them seal the deal."
The Saxons will next visit St. John Fisher College on Wednesday with tip-off scheduled at 7pm.
