GENESEO, NY – The Alfred University men's basketball team picked up their third consecutive road win in an 83-74 victory over SUNY Geneseo on Tuesday evening from the Carl Schrader Gymnasium.
The Saxons (5-1) shot 54.4 percent from the field in the win. AU also won the rebound battle against the Knights (1-3) by a 33-24 margin.
Senior graduate
Brewster Marshall (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) finished with a double-double performance that consisted of a team-high 24 points and 12 rebounds. Junior forward
Elliot Bowen (Salamanca, NY/Ellicotville) totaled 12 points to go with three rebounds and three assists. Junior guard
Mike Schmidt (Olean, NY/Olean) compiled 19 points while shooting 7-of-11 from the field.
"We did a great job offensively in the second half tonight," Head Coach
Erich Kaempffe said. "A bunch of different guys stepped up in big moments."
Each side traded shots to open the first half, as there were multiple lead changes early on. A total of nine points from Marshall permitted the Saxons with a 39-38 advantage at the break. A 16-6 run from AU in the second half allowed the team to lead by as many as 12 points. Calculated shots in the final two minutes of action resulted in the eventual victory.
"We still need to improve defensively," Kaempffe said. "I thought Geneseo did some really good things on that end that gave us some trouble."
Alfred University will travel to play the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford on December 2 with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 PM.
