Saxons Defense Holds Strong in 69-47 Win Over Pitt-Bradford

BRADFORD, PA – The Alfred University men's basketball team picked up their third consecutive road victory in a 69-47 win over the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford on Thursday evening from the KOA Arena.

The Saxons (6-1) won the rebound battle by a 58-38 margin, while the defense held the Panthers (4-3) to 31.6% from the field.

Junior guard Mike Schmidt (Olean, NY/Olean) scored a team-high 18 points to go with three rebounds and three assists. Senior forward Brewster Marshall (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) finished with a double-double performance that consisted of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Junior forward Darren Miller (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse) compiled a career-high 12 boards along with six points.

"Our guys did a great job staying committed defensively when we were struggling to score," Head Coach Erich Kaempffe said. "I was really proud of that."

Marshall and Schmidt set the pace offensively in the first half, combining for seven of the team's opening nine points. Sophomore forward Casey Curran (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) added six points of his own in the first half, but quick scoring from the Panthers permitted AU with a 21-19 lead at the break.

The Saxons opened the second half with a 9-0 run across the first two minutes of action. A collective effort from AU, highlighted by eight points from junior forward Elliot Bowen (Salamanca, NY/Ellicotville), had the team leading by as many as 22 points to secure the win.

"We want to enjoy tonight's win," Kaempffe said. "Our guys have done a nice job through seven games. We're excited to make a ton of improvements across the board before we play again."

Alfred University will next play Franklin and Marshall College during the first round of the Sponaugle New Years Tournament on December 29 with tipoff scheduled for 7:30 PM.
