ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's basketball team wrapped up the weekend during the Special Tees Tip-Off Tournament at Alfred State's Orvis Activities Center with a 69-65 overtime loss to St. Lawrence University.
The Saxons (2-1, 0-0 Empire 8) were led by a game-high 23 points from
Brewster Marshall (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) and a game-high 14 rebounds from the senior. He shot 60% from the floor, going 9-for-15 (1-for-1 from 3-point land) and added a perfect, 4-for-4 performance from the free throw line while grabbing seven offensive and seven defensive rebounds, assisting on two buckets and stealing the ball twice on Saturday.
Cole Eells (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) continued his streak of double-digit scoring as he tacked on 14 points in the loss.
Elliot Bowen (Salamanca, NY/Ellicotville) also added 10 points and seven rebound to round out the top performers for AU.
The Saxons faced a nine-point halftime deficit before rallying and scoring a game-high 37 points in a half to force the extra minutes. "I was really happy with how we fought back in the second half after being down double digits early," Head Coach
Erich Kaempffe said. "St Lawrence played well. A lot of credit to them."
It took the Saxons just four minutes into the start of the second half to tie the game, 30-30 before taking their first lead since the opening bucket of the game.
Mike Schmidt (Olean, NY/Olean) gave AU its first second half advantage with a jumper. AU continued its momentum to eventually hold its largest lead of the game, 47-39 off a layup by Bowen.
With just over three and a half minutes to go, facing an AU advantage of 58-52, the Saints (2-0, 0-0 Liberty League) went on a 6-0 run to close out the half and force overtime where they outscored AU, 11-7 for the non-conference win.
AU will next travel to SUNY Delhi on Saturday, November 20 for a 2:00pm game start.
