ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's soccer team fell in Empire 8 action from Yunevich Stadium in a close, 3-2 loss to Houghton College on Wednesday evening.
Â
The Saxons (3-9-2, 2-4-0 Empire 8) tied the match up at 2-2 early in the second half when
Sai Baraka (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) crossed a pass to the middle of the box for
Henry Smith (Manassas, VA/Lancaster) to hop kick it down to middle of the net in the 52
nd minute of play.
Â
Houghton scored the game-winning goal just six minutes later, leaving the remaining of the game a clock-killing situation for them and a mad rush for the Saxons to put up offensive strikes. "We played really well tonight especially in the second half and if we could've finished the chances, the scoreboard would have been different," Head Coach
Tracy Blake said.
Â
William Moore (Stormville, NY/John Jay) scored AU's first goal of the game as they were facing a 2-0 deficit going into the 37
th minute when a long ball to the Houghton goalie was kicked back to the feet of Moore who put a slow roller past the frantic keeper.
Â
Daniel Koenig (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay) played the entirety in goal, making seven saves on the night.
Â
The Saxons will next travel to St. John Fisher College on Saturday, October 23 for a 3:00pm kickoff in Empire 8 action.
