Women's Tennis Ends 2021 Schedule in Nail-Biting 5-4 Loss to Brockport

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's tennis team wrapped up its Fall 2021 schedule with a non-conference loss to SUNY Brockport as the fifth and final point was decided in the last singles match on Sunday evening on the William T. Brown Tennis Courts.

The Saxons (4-9, 2-4 Empire 8) and the Golden Eagles (4-1, 1-1 SUNYAC) were watching with bated breath as No. 6 singles went into extra points with Brockport's Victoria Andrews winning the first set, 6-4 and AU's Alexis Giordano (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) claiming the second set, 7-6(7-4). The match was decided with Andrews winning in the third set, 10-5.

Alfred University started the day off with a 2-1 lead after doubles as Isabelle Benoit (Bow, NH/Tilton School) and Giordano tied the match at 1-1 at No. 3 doubles, defeating the Aubin twins of Brockport, Shannon and Samantha, 8-4. Lauren Boshart (Oswego, NY/Oswego) and Abigail Call (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) then got the lead with an 8-6 victory over Elizabeth Sirico and Heather Phillips.

Boshart gave AU some cushion in its lead as she was the first singles player to finish, defeating Sirico, 6-3, 6-2 and wrapping up her senior year's regular season with a six-match win streak at No. 3 singles.

"What another fun match today. I was happy that everyone was able to get a match today against a strong Brockport team," Head Coach Jordan Crouch said. "So proud of the resilience for this team again fighting until the very end. This year has been a blast as a coach. Big shoutout to Lauren [Boshart] for going out with two huge wins. Couldn't be happier for her to have a day like today. Now it's time to get after it in the off-season. We'll be back bigger, faster and stronger!"

SUNY Brockport tied the match at 3-3 after winning No. 2 and No. 1 singles, respectively. Eve Liu (Yantai, China/Wilbraham and Monson Academy) put AU back on top, 4-3 with a 7-6(7-4), 6-4 No. 4 singles win before the Golden Eagles finished the day with No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
