Men's Tennis Pushes Past Lycoming in Dramatic Fashion

Saxons begin Spring Break with 5-4 victory

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Junior Logan Cross (Olean, N.Y./Olean) submitted an impressive come-from-behind performance at first singles, leading the Alfred University men's tennis team in a dramatic 5-4 triumph against Lycoming, held at the Central Pennsylvania Tennis Center Saturday afternoon.

The Saxons snap a two-match slide, their record standing at 3-2. They also break Lycoming's (3-4) three-match winning streak.

The final and deciding match at first singles between Cross and Lycoming's Nate Redell was a back-and-forth affair. Redell opened with a 6-4 victory in the first set, then skated out to an impressive 5-2 lead in the second set, putting the singles and team match in doubt for the visiting Saxons.

Undeterred, Cross settled down and submitted one of the best individual performances of the young season. The junior earned five consecutive wins, eventually taking the second set by a 7-5 score. With the momentum now on Cross' side, he earned the Saxons a team win with a 10-6 triumph in the deciding set.

Ryan Brown (Olean, N.Y./Olean), Wes Dennison (Almond, N.Y./Alfred Almond) and Matt Hibbert (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) also earned singles wins.  Brown defeated Cody Greenaway in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1. Dennison and Hibbert earned forfeit wins in singles and as a doubles team at No. 3.

"Today was a hard-fought match against a strong Lycoming team," said head coach Jordan Crouch. "Shout-out to Logan because he saved multiple points in his match and clinched for us! Great way to start our trip!"

The Saxons will be logging serious miles this week, beginning with a trip down south to visit Pfeiffer University in North Carolina on Monday at 2 p.m.
