ALBANY, NY – The Alfred University women's basketball team was at The Sage Colleges on Sunday to make up a game that was postponed on Friday due to weather.
After a hard fought opening two quarter, the Saxons were unable to hold up with a tough Gator team throughout the second half and fell by a score of 87-61.
Some strong defensive play and offense in the paint helped AU out to a 17-10 lead in the first quarter.
The Gators then went on a 10-2 run to end the opening 10 minutes to take a 21-19 lead heading into the second.
Sage extended its lead up to as many as 10 points by the 3:51 mark of the second quarter before three pointers from Alfred's
Rebecca Jewett (Nyack, NY / Nyack) and
Gillian Flint (Caledonia, NY / Caledonia-Mumford) cut the deficit to just five.
At the end of the first half Sage led AU by a score of 39-32.
Sage controlled the third quarter, as the Gators outscored the Saxons 27-14 in the period to take a 20 point lead into the fourth.
By the final period, AU was out of gas and could not make enough of a comeback effort to get back into the contest.
Jewett put together a career high game in scoring with 20 points on the day to lead Alfred.
Jamie Wilcox (Forestville, NY / Pine Valley) reached double figures with 10 points while
Lyndsey McCoy (Middleburgh, NY / Middleburgh Central) and
Ana Ion (Bucharest, Romania / Episcopal of Jacksonville) each finished with eight.
The loss drops AU to 5-17 on the season and 1-10 in the conference while Sage improves to 8-3 in the Empire 8.
The Saxons will be back at Terry S. Galanis Family arena next Friday to host Elmira College at 7:30PM.
