Alfred Picks Up Victory in Play 4 Kay Breast Cancer Awareness Game

ALFRED – The Alfred University women's basketball team played host to Elmira College on Friday evening.

The game was had a pink theme to it as a Play 4 Kay breast cancer awareness fundraiser was held throughout the contest.

Led by junior forward, Kelley Andrews (Randolph, NY / Pine Valley), those involved set the goal to raise 1,000 dollars but were able to beat that mark easily as they made 1,400 dollars for a great cause.

The Saxons (6-16, 2-10 Empire 8) also had a great night on the court as they handled the Soaring Eagles by a score of 65-44.

A quick start helped AU take control as it was able to grab a 23-4 lead during the first quarter.

Elmira worked its way back during the second and were able to get within nine, but another run to end the first half made it 40-21 in favor of the Saxons at the break.

Alfred was able to take care of the ball and create quality shot opportunities to extend its lead up to as many as 26 points during the third quarter.

In the fourth, AU was able to hold a comfortable lead and come away with one of its more commanding victories of the season.

"We knew we had to be aggressive both offensively and defensively with our starting lineup," Head coach Mike Moskowitz said. "We executed our game plan well and built a lead. From there we focused on having good possessions offensively and stringing together stops on defense. I am proud of the intensity and heart we played with tonight and I am hoping we can replicate that tomorrow for senior day."

Gillian Flint (Caledonia, NY / Caledonia-Mumford) and Ana Ion (Bucharest, Romania / Episcopal of Jacksonville) led the Saxon offense with 14 points each.

Bri Hicks (Burlington, VT / Ithaca) scored 12 points and grabbed 14 rebounds while Lyndsey McCoy (Middleburgh, NY / Middleburgh Central) finished with 11.

The Saxons will be looking for a similar outcome on Saturday as they host Hartwick College at 4PM.
