Backstroke Duo of Edmister and Volaski Sweep at Hartwick Despite Saxon Loss

ONEONTA, NY – The Alfred University men's swimming & diving team fell to Hartwick College, 117-172 on Saturday afternoon to cap off a long, three-meet week with two road meets.

The Saxons were led by the duo of Andy Edmister (Belmont, NY/Genesee Valley Central) and Phillip Volaski (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) as they swept the backstroke events. Edmister won the 100 with a time of 55.15 and the 200 with a 2:01.04 while Volaski took second in both with times of 56.26 and 2:02.22, respectively. Volaski also picked up a second place finish in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:05.33 as he was followed by Vincent Tamplain (Luling, LA/Hahnville) in third with a 2:09.33.

"Having three meets this week has been rough, and caught up with a lot of the student-athletes," Head Coach Brian Striker '00 said. "Results were not ideal, but we had some great swims, especially our backstroke. Getting wins on the boards was nice too! We can look back at what we put into this over the past two weeks and be excited for the next month!"

Edmister teamed with Colin Schultz (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport), Tamplain and Ryan Brown (Olean, NY/Olean) in the 200 medley relay. Edmister swam the opening backstroke leg as the team combined for a time of 1:41.86 to take second.

Billy Mirenda (Middletown, NY/Minisink) won both diving sessions with a score of 191.50.

Shultz picked up a second place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:24.35 as he narrowly edged out teammate, Justin Jarmer (Flagstaff, AZ/Northland Preparatory Academy) and his 2:24.90. Besides Tamplain's third place in the 200 IM, he also earned a second place finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.84 while Brown picked up a silver in the 50 free with a 22.67 on Saturday to close out the top finishes for Alfred University.

The Saxons will next host Ithaca College in the final home meet and final dual meet of the 2019-20 season on Saturday, January 25 at 1 p.m. in the McLane Natatorium. Saturday's meet will also be Senior Day where the lone Saxon Senior, Edmister will be celebrated before the first race.
