ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's basketball team hosted Nazareth College on Saturday afternoon.
Â
After a tight first quarter, Nazareth was able to pull away for a good portion of the game to secure the 70-56 win over the Saxons (4-8, 0-2 Empire 8) for its tenth victory of the season.
Â
Missed layups and tough shots just not falling for AU was the story of this game.
Â
After being outscored in the first three quarters, the Saxons put together a respectable fourth quarter and outscored Nazareth 18-14 in the final 10 minutes.
Â
"I'm pleased with our bounce back in effort and togetherness today after a tough day yesterday, Head Coach
Mike Moskowitz said. "We had a lot of great looks in the first half and as has been the story all year, they were rimming out. We've spoken a lot about being persistent and understanding the importance of the next defensive possession after those shots, but we had a few lapses in focus and discipline in the second quarter. Overall our competition level was a lot better today and we will be prepared for next weekend."
Â
Bri Hicks (Burlington, VT / Ithaca) was the high scorer for Alfred with 13 points. She also was impressive on the boards with 14 rebounds and forced five steals on defense.
Â
Jamie Wilcox (Forestville, NY / Pine Valley) ended with 10 points on the day and dished out four assists.
Â
Gillian Flint (Caledonia, NY / Caledonia-Mumford) scored eight and grabbed six rebounds.
Â
The Saxons will be back in action next Friday at Hartwick College at 7:30PM.
