Saxon Highlights of the Week
ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's soccer team lost a tough overtime matchup with Cazenovia College on Saturday in its first contest of the Bryan Karl Tournament at Yunevich Stadium. The Saxons (0-3, 0-0 Empire 8) fell in the first overtime period by a score of 3-2.
AU was able to get off to a quick start when
Zachary Gloskin (New City, NY / Clarkstown South) sent a pass forward to
Gavin Harrington (Elmira, NY / Notre Dame) for an early goal and a 1-0 advantage over the Wildcats.
The Saxons held that lead for a portion of the first half before Cazenovia responded to make it 1-1.
AU brought more excitement in the later part of the opening half when
Evan Merkey (Webster, NY / Webster Schroeder) sent a long pass ahead for
Saif Alseyofi (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia / AQS), who finished with a header and gave the Saxons the 2-1 lead.
Cazenovia tied things up in the second half and the teams locked down the defense to end regulation all knotted up at two.
The overtime period was short-lived when Cazenovia lined up for a corner kick early in the period. After multiple deflections off of the corner, the ball ended up in the back of the net for the Wildcats. The officials took their time to have a discussion in order to rule it a good goal but ultimately it ended with Cazenovia on the winning side of things.
The Saxons will look to turn the page against Baruch tomorrow as they face-off with the Bearcats on day two of the Bryan Karl Tournament. That game is set to kick off at 12PM.
