Box Score CENTER VALLEY, PA – The Alfred University women's soccer team took on Muhlenberg College on Sunday afternoon in the ECAC tournament. The Saxons advanced to the second round match against the Mules after advancing on a 9-8 penalty kick shootout over DeSales on Saturday.
AU found itself down early after a Muhlenberg goal in the second minute put the Saxons in a 1-0 hole.
Amanda Guariglia (Valley Stream, NY / Valley Stream South) put a shot on goal for Alfred in the 17
th minute but could not get it past the Muhlenberg goalkeeper.
The score remained 1-0 going into halftime.
Emily Wright (Dallas, TX / Plano West) put a shot on goal in the opening minutes of the second half but the goalkeeper once again smothered that to keep AU off the board.
The Mules extended their lead in the 67
th minute when a ball snuck through the Saxon defense for a goal.
A corner kick opportunity in the 76
th minute was taken advantage by the Saxons when Wright placed a perfect lob in front of the net that Guariglia finished to put Alfred on the board.
The Saxons continued to battle down the stretch but could not even the game as they fell to Muhlenberg by a score of 2-1.
The loss for Alfred marks the end of the 2019 season and gives the Saxons a final record of 8-8-6 on the year.
"Today was a tough battle for us," Head Coach
Craig Yanni said. "We had a couple of costly mistakes that put us down early. We battled hard but just couldn't get enough going offensively. I want to thank the seniors for all they have done for our program."
